- Hooked by a Merman – A Dive into Love in "This Boy Caught a Merman"
Let's talk about "This Boy Caught a Merman," because I can't contain my excitement! I have to say, it's a heartfelt little gem I did not expect to stumble upon, but boy am I glad I did. It is a 28-minute OVA but definitely worth the watch. The narrative is simply endearing. Shima, our main character, is in deep sorrow over his grandfather's passing – a universal human experience, right? But then the story takes a whimsical twist when he is saved by a merman, Isaki, in the middle of his grief-driven ocean plunge. An unlikely friendship (or maybe more?) starts to bloom in the most unexpected place - Shima's bathtub. It's as surreal as it sounds. And can we just appreciate the organic character growth here? Seeing Shima go from a gloomy, introverted character to someone who is visibly happier and more sociable is rewarding. But hey, it isn't just a one-way street. Isaki, who starts off as this mysterious aquatic entity, slowly opens up. This isn't just a love story – it's an exploration of loneliness, the importance of expressing your true self, and the courage it takes to step out of your comfort zone. The animation style was also a standout aspect. It's simple, clean, but loaded with emotions and saturated color. Every frame in this anime served a purpose and added depth to the story, making it a pleasure to watch. Now, I won't give away the ending because spoilers are evil, but I will say this – grab your tissues because you're in for an emotional rollercoaster ride. So, if you're up for a one-of-a-kind anime that combines elements of romance, drama, fantasy, and real-life struggles, then do yourself a favor and dive into "This Boy Caught a Merman." Final thoughts? Watch it, love it, thank me later! Be sure to check out my other reviews here on BLU.
- Ertal Games: The One-Person Powerhouse Rocking Yaoi Visual Novels
Okay get comfy, grab your Yaoi mugs because we're diving deep into the crazy world that is Ertal Games . If you're thirsty for some English Boys Love visual novels, stop scrolling through mediocre fanfics and get with the program—Ertal Games is one of the studios where you need to be. With several projects super successful on Kickstarter and many themes that people tend to avoid, Ertal Games has made a name for themselves. The Deets on Ertal Games Ertal Games is like a Swiss Army knife of Yaoi brilliance. From the sublime romance of "A Hand in the Darkness" to the ominous allure of "Blood and Lust" this indie developer has a knack for tapping into the Boys Love psyche. Sure, it's a one-person show, but who the hell cares when you've got titles like "Lurkers" and "Night and Day" ? Whether you're angling for gothic romance, historical drama, or workplace shenanigans, Ertal's got you covered. And not just in English but Spanish too. Let's take a sec to get hype about the works such as "Deep in the Forest" and "Exes Assault!!" The first one sounds like a freaky fairy tale, and honestly, I'm already hooked by the name alone. Very excited to give it a go. But "Exes Assault!!" now that's the real kicker here. Picture this (Golden Girls reference ha): Jorge, a dude who's got the emotional range of a teaspoon, suddenly has to grow the fuck up. And of all the nightmare scenarios he could end up in, he's got to work with not one, not two, but FOUR of his exes. Yeah, just yeah...drama. First of all, Jorge's story is as relatable as it gets. We've all been shitty to someone we've dated (don't lie; I know you have). So, the game turns the tables and makes you navigate this minefield of awkward encounters and, oh yeah, possible redemption? Now here's where it gets interesting. You've got two versions of this bad boy—SFW and NSFW. Which to me is a good choice for Yaoi fans just getting started in the genre. The SFW version is safe enough to stream on Twitch or YouTube, but it's still got those "spicy situations." Here on Boys Love Universe we aren't worried over censorship but not everyone is like that so that's a win-win for other content creators. But if you're a daredevil like me, go straight for the NSFW version. I don't stream or create content. My voice is in my pen or keyboard or...anything I can write with. And I still prefer the NSFW version for all its glory. Firstly, anyone who can manage this kind of storytelling scope solo deserves mad props. Ertal Games is delivering the kind of emotionally complex Boys Love content we're all starving for. Emotional and also shock value based games that we've all seen in some Yaoi OVAs before. Whether you want to swoon, scream, or get a little scandalized, there's a title tailored just for you. Secondly, the relatability. Ertal knows how to tap into those universal themes that make us human—the need for love, the thrill of lust, and the complex emotional baggage that comes with it. Lastly, if you've ever dismissed visual novels as "not real games," think again. Ertal is single-handedly proving that this genre can be as gripping as any AAA title out there. These games make you think, feel, and get utterly obsessed. I prefer visual novels way over AAA games because stories feel richer and raw when you play but also read/listen. If you're really looking for English Boys Love visual novels that actually deliver on drama, romance, and a shit-ton of complexity, Ertal Games is your golden ticket. And seriously, support "Exes Assault!!" because that trainwreck-in-the-making is going to be the talk of the town. And by trainwreck I mean the plot is going to have its ups and downs like all Yaoi drama does. Don't sleep on this indie developer, y'all. The buzz is real, and it's only getting louder. Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got some NSFW demo gameplay to dive into. Catch you later! Keep the Yaoi cu...coming!
- Numina RPG: Witness a BL Relationship Growth
We has a great chat with the creator or Numina! Check it out to learn more about this awesome game. Unlike other RPGs, Numina aims for a more immersive experience by allowing relationships to develop or deteriorate based on your choices. It's not just a single moment; you get to witness the growth or demise of the relationship. Let's learn more about this amazing game! 1.Tell us about your work Numina is not your typical RPG adventure: It breaks through the 4th wall, inviting players to become an integral part of the story. You embody a unique character—a bodiless voice that resonates within the mind of the protagonist, Shawn. The journey begins at a critical moment in Shawn's life, where he grapples with the loss of someone dear while being entangled in a gripping conspiracy that intertwines your shared bond and the fate of the entire world. Numina is a passion project, born out of the love for the JRPGs I grew up with like Tales of Symphonia and Baten Kaitos. They inspired me to create a game that prioritizes the profound relationships between the players and a diverse cast of party members. In Numina, your choices shape not only the story's course but also the dynamics between Shawn and his companions, unlocking powerful combo-attacks in battle and even paving the way for deeper, more meaningful connections 2.What can BL fans expect to see in your game Numina? Numina features a gay romance option between Shawn and another party member. But unlike many other RPGs where romance is reduced to a single pivotal moment, I wanted to create a more immersive experience. Meaning the game isn’t almost over once you start a relationship with another character: You actually get to see the relationship grow… or fall apart depending on your choices. 3.What inspires your work? That’s a tough question, but I feel like everything I do is an amalgamation of games I enjoyed, books, shows or movies that inspired me and even personal experiences that seep into my work. Like for Numina, the universal themes of loss, hardships, and the profound connections and warmth that can be found between individuals form significant pillars. But there are also certain topics that hold personal significance to me, which I consciously choose to explore within the project. For Numina a big part was our relation as a society to work in a capitalist environment and LGBTQ+ issues. I think that games can serve as a powerful medium to address such topics, as they offer the unique ability to transport players into different worlds and perspectives. Particularly within a fantasy setting, games provide an opportunity to discuss real-world issues without the burden of preconceived notions, if approached with subtlety and nuance. 4.What does Pride Month mean to you? Happy Pride month everyone! Pride Month has two meanings for me. Firstly, it serves as a reminder of the challenges many individuals have faced, where moments of negativity and fear may have hindered them from embracing their true selves. Pride Month is like an annual reminder to fight back and get back to your own truth. Secondly, it’s an opportunity to go out and celebrate that truth with other people. Pride Marches are such a visceral experience in that way for me. I recently attended a march where a group for marriage equality was marching with an older gay couple in the front, teary eyed and smiling non-stop as everyone was greeting each other with “Happy Pride!”. It was such a lovely, welcoming atmosphere. You’d wish the entire world would be like that all the time. 5.Where can people support your work? You can get Numina on Steam https://store.steampowered.com/app/597060/Numina/ and itch.io https://starlit.itch.io/numina --- Are you itching to join the fun? - Entitlement in Modern BL Fandoms: Why Gen Z Can't (or Won't) Do It Themselves
Let’s get one thing straight: the entitlement in modern fandoms—especially around BL content—has gotten out of hand. You see it everywhere, especially from younger generations, demanding translations, mods, or whatever else they feel should be handed to them on a silver platter. Back in the day, if you wanted to play a BL game or read a visual novel in English, you had to roll up your sleeves, hit the forums, and find those who were dedicated enough to put in the damn work to make it accessible. Now? It’s like Gen Z doesn’t even want to learn how to download a game, let alone figure out how to mod or patch it. Let's chat about this along with the Reddit post that has some amazing points . The Old Guard : Paving the Way for Free In the 2000s and early 2010s, it was the fans—mostly teens and young adults—who made things happen. You had kids learning how to mod games, create patches, and pirate files just so others could enjoy niche BL content that would never see an official English release. Forums like Aarinfantasy were treasure troves for BL games, where people ripped and shared entire patches they’d made themselves. These were community efforts, people banding together because they wanted to share the love of BL. Hell, Dramatical Murder is a perfect example of how far people would go. There was no official English release, so the fans took it upon themselves to make it playable for English-speaking audiences. And they didn’t just translate; they modded, patched, and even taught others how to play the game on modern systems. The thing is, those old forums and blog posts are still being used today, by a whole new generation of fans who, instead of contributing, just whine about how hard it is to download the files or navigate the patches. The Decline of DIY Fandom Culture Look, I get it. Gen Z has grown up with convenient, user-friendly devices that do everything for you. But that’s no excuse for the computer illiteracy I’m seeing now. Back in the 2000s, people figured out how to mod games from scratch, share files, and teach others—all without the same resources we have today. Now, when it comes to preserving old BL games or keeping those translations alive, there’s a glaring lack of people stepping up to learn or contribute. Where are the new fan translators? The people who can create patches or mods for games stuck in Japanese? It’s insane to think that some of the only playable versions of these older BL games come from files made by fans over a decade ago. And it’s all the more frustrating when you see younger fans today asking for these files but not even knowing how to download or install them. They’ll post on Reddit or Twitter, confused about the process, instead of doing some basic research. And it’s not just BL fandoms; this entitlement is everywhere. They want streams, easy downloads, and someone else to do all the hard work. It’s embarrassing. The Future of BL Game Preservation Looks Grim When you think about the future of BL game preservation, it doesn’t look great. If Gen Z can’t figure out how to work a forum or install a patch, what’s going to happen when more of these older games become impossible to find or play? The fans back in the day were driven, passionate, and skilled. They put in the time to preserve these games, but the new crowd? They don’t even know how to use Visual Novel Database to find games that suit their interests. And don’t even get me started on the piracy debate. There was a time when creators and patch makers were willing to distribute their work for free, as long as people could prove they bought the game to support it. Now, people throw a fit over having to buy anything at all, and when the patch gets leaked, the modders just close up shop. Then, those same entitled fans turn around and start stealing translations for their YouTube videos, further screwing over the community that worked hard to make this content available in the first place. It’s a joke. The Ugly Side of Entitlement and Convenience It’s wild to see how much the landscape of fandom has changed. These days, everything has to be convenient. If it’s not, people aren’t interested. They’d rather moan about how they can’t play a game because it’s not in English, even though resources like Lunatranslator and Texthookers exist and are readily available. The information is out there , but instead of doing the work, they demand the fandom cater to their every need. It’s not that the tools aren’t there—it’s that they don’t want to use them. And what really grinds my gears is the entitlement and disrespect. You’ll see people yelling at romance game communities for not having BL content. Like, excuse me? BL has always been niche, but there are resources out there. You just have to look. The problem is, most people don’t want to look—they just want it handed to them. And it’s exhausting. The fandom I grew up with, one full of people willing to help, teach, and share, has been overrun by folks who expect everything to be prepackaged and easy. Final Thoughts: Stop Being Lazy, Start Learning Honestly, I don’t know where we go from here. The entitlement is ruining everything, and it’s not just in the BL community. People want everything cheap, easy, and in their hands yesterday, but aren’t willing to put in any effort to make it happen. The few creators who are still around are over it. And unless younger fans start stepping up and learning how to mod, translate, and preserve games, a lot of this content is going to disappear for good. And that? That’s a loss we can’t afford. It’s time to stop being lazy and start contributing. Learn how to install a patch. Figure out how to use a texthooker. Do the work. Because if you’re just sitting there waiting for someone else to do it for you, don’t be surprised when there’s nothing left for you to enjoy.
